Ceramic Collection

Fired in form, this collection of ceramic stools is more than an expression of simplicity in design, it is a declaration to the beauty of craft. Using a 2000-year-old method of forming and firing these pieces, Chris and Anna Weylandt saw an opportunity to explore the unpredictability of making. Through their travels, they noticed suppliers would discard pieces if they weren’t perfect, but for Weylandts, these are the details that make a product one of a kind.

Crafted in Vietnam, these ceramic stools are fired in a structure referred to as the Climbing Dragon Kiln. A method that has not changed in centuries and relies solely on hand crafting, the kiln is an architectural marvel.

LOREM IPSUM

"To date, this has been the most jaw dropping factory I have ever visited. The skill and knowledge it takes to produce these products is incredible and evocative of true artistry. The scale of this kiln is unbelievable and is somehow rebuilt every year. There is a small shrine at the entrance of the first chamber – this kiln is blessed and offered to the gods for a successful firing. The process is romance and craft all in one.” - Anna Weylandt

Inspired by the vast, arid landscape that Chris Weylandt grew up in, this piece is available in a selection of rich stains and the Sossusvlei Leather range. The Edgar Chair is a tribute to Namibia, an ode to Edgar, and a testament to the preservation of truly iconic pieces.

The shape of these stools showcase the richness of each glaze used in the firing process. Depending on the position of the stool within the kiln, varying temperatures and air flow determine the final result. Like a moment frozen in time, the glaze is captured dripping down the edges, reminding us to find beauty in unpredictability.

Due to the nature of wood-firing in these expansive kilns, no two pieces are the same. The process gives way to subtle differences that are impossible to replicate and thus, even more captivating. The allure of wood-fired ceramics lies in this blend of unpredictability and mastery. The craftsmen relinquish a degree of control to the elements, embracing the unknown, and in doing so, create pieces that are alive with the energy of the process.

This new collection is a celebration of craft. An ode to craftsmen. And a testament to the beauty of raw materials.
